Static password by Yubico & Forum
All YubiKeys ordered since September 2008 can be programmed to generate a 32-digit strong static password instead of the OTP. This solution requires no back-end server integration and therefore works with most legacy username-password solutions. It is more of a security compromise given that the code is static, but there are a number of applications where it provides a “good-enough and pragmatic” solution.
The Yubico web page http://www.yubico.com/developers/personalization/ indicates that programming the Yubikey with a static password may erase the information that synchronizes (authenticates) your Yubikey with Yubico's servers (which are always dynamic one-time passwords). This is true. However, version 2.0 of the Yubikey allows two (2) configurations that are independent. The first configuration is synchronized with their servers, and is a dynamic, one-time password (OTP). It is unknown whether the second configuration is empty, a duplicate OTP, or something else. However, if you have a version 2.0 Yubikey, you can over-write the 2nd configuration with a static password, while leaving the first configuration with a OTP.
